GREENVILLE—Leonard (Paul) Wice, Colonel (Ret.) US Army, 87, of Greenville, died Sunday, May 5, 2024 at his residence and went to be with the Lord. Born March 6, 1937, in Muhlenberg County, the son of Rev. Leonard Bryan Wice and Phoebe Iris Covington Wice. He was a member of Mercer Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Muhlenberg Central High School in 1956, obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Murray State University in 1961, and a Master’s Degree from Georgia State University in 1973. He was an US Army officer from 1961 to 1987, serving three combat tours in Vietnam, 1964-1965, 1967-1968, and 1971-1972. He was in the Army Command and General Staff College in 1974 and the Army War College in 1984, and served as an Army Aviator Fixed/Rotary Wing; Commander, Divisional Support Command, 101st Airborne Div. from 1981-1983; and was Director of Readiness Army Aviation Systems Command from 1984-1988.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ira D. (“Porky”) Wice, and sister Marjorie Hancock.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville conducted by Rev. Ron Noffsinger. Burial with military honors will follow at Greens Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife,Glyna Wice; son, Mark (Patricia) Wice; daughter, Tina (Kevin) McCarville; six grandchildren—-Kelly Wice, Jared (Kelli) Wice, Sean Wice, Travis (Kayla) Park, Bryce (Jillian) Park, and Anna (Conner) Davis; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Sue Osburn.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 10 at Gary’s Funeral Home from 5:00 p,n, until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, May 11 from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral at 11:00 a.m.
