Gov. Beshear orders flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Vice President Mondale

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2023) – In accordance with a proclamation from the White House, Gov. Andy Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter from sunrise on Saturday, Nov. 25, until sunset on Wednesday, Nov. 29.

President Joe Biden’s proclamation states, “Throughout her life as First Lady of Georgia and First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter exemplified hope, warmth, and a steadfast commitment to doing all she could to address many of our society’s greatest needs. She was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls; an advocate for mental health and wellness for all; and a supporter of the often unseen and uncompensated caregivers of our children, aging loved ones, and people with disabilities. Above all, the deep love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership, and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism.”

On Sunday, Gov. Beshear said via social media, “Our country is mourning the loss of a great First Lady with the passing of Rosalynn Carter. Mrs. Carter lived out her faith and values every day, spreading love and kindness wherever she went. Britainy and I are praying for the former President and the entire Carter family.”

Funeral services for Mrs. Carter will take place Nov. 29 at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, followed by private interment at the Carter family residence.

The Governor has also directed flags to be lowered Saturday in honor of Staff Sgt. Tanner W. Grone and Sgt. Andrew P. Southard, two of the Fort Campbell soldiers who died in a helicopter crash in the Mediterranean Sea and whose funerals are taking place that day. Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses and organizations throughout the commonwealth to join in this tribute. Flag status information is available at governor.ky.gov/flag-status.
