Gov. Beshear orders flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Vice President Mondale

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 12, 2023) – On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the death of former Kentucky Gov. Julian Carroll. The 54th Governor of the commonwealth, Carroll served in that role from 1974 to 1979. Prior to becoming Governor, he served as Lieutenant Governor from 1971 to 1974. Carroll reentered politics in 2004, running for a seat in the Kentucky State Senate, where he served from 2005 until his retirement in 2020. He was 92 years old when he died.

“Former Gov. Julian Carroll dedicated his career to public service. For decades he worked to support public education and those he represented in Frankfort,” said Gov. Beshear. “Please join Britainy and me in praying for his family during this difficult time.”

The former Governor will lie in state in the rotunda of the Kentucky State Capitol on Friday, Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. EST, with a memorial service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Elevate Church in Frankfort, with burial to follow at Frankfort Cemetery.
