An early morning blaze has destroyed two buildings in downtown Greenville. The call for responders went out just before 3 a.m. on April 7, after a fire broke out on the second floor of a brick building at 103 East Main Cross at the corner of Main Street.
Traffic in the downtown area is restricted and the intersection of Main Street and East Main Cross will remain closed until further notice.
Officials said the fire spread from the second floor of 103 East Main Cross to the upper floors of 101 East Main Cross. The building is home to the Corner Piece Cafe, which opened just weeks ago.
The three-story buildings are most likely a total loss, and will be torn down. There were no injuries reported, and officials are not able to determine the cause of the fire at this time.
Fire crews from around the area responded to the blaze. Ladder trucks responded from Hartford and Madisonville, with another arriving from Owensboro later in the morning.
Greenville recently received a ladder truck as a gift from another fire department in the state, but officials said it has not completed certification and is not in use yet. A ladder truck from Central City had mechanical problems this morning, an official said.
Historian Barry Duvall said the building on the corner at 101 East Main Cross is the second oldest commercial building in the county, built by Thomas Summers sometime between 1877 and 1879.
This is a developing story.
