COL (Ret.) David M. Winkler, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas. Born December 4, 1939, in Central City, to William Alfred Winkler and Justine Merritt. Beginning his career in the Artillery, Colonel Winkler was last assigned to the Pentagon as a Personnel Programs Management Staff Officer. He served in Viet Nam and was posted around the world including Korea and, his favorite, Germany. He was the Athletic Administrator of the U.S Military Academy at West Point, Executive Club Manager for the Nuremberg Club system in Germany as well as Executive club manager at Fort Sam Houston. During his career he was honored with the Legion of Merit Medal and Bronze Star Medals, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. His education consisted of The Adjutant General Officer Advanced Certificate,Bachelor of Science from Western Kentucky University, and a Master of Science from Shippensburg University. He also attended the Army War College in Carlisle Penn. He was preceded in death by his parents. A loving father and grandfather,
Survivors include his daughters, Cynthia (Edward) Hulsey, Emily (Christopher) DeVault, Julie Winkler; grandchildren, Christian DeVault, Camille DeVault, Ethan DeVault, Charis Anderson, Arielle Anderson; sister, Diana (Jim) Stuart and his beloved dachshund Bubba.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 6, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
