William Leslie Scott

GREENVILLE—William Leslie Scott, 80, of Greenville, died Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.  Born on October 1, 1943, the middle child of Billie and Louise Wilkins Scott.  Their entire lives, he was extremely close to his siblings Ann McRoy and Lloyd Scott.  At age 16 on February 6, he had his first date with classmate June Wimberly.  They never went with anyone else and married two years out of high school.  You may have heard them remark that they “became one,” and no doubt, you witnessed it.  Together they did everything, having two children William and Maclynn.  You rarely saw one without the other whether it be taking vacations, work trips, church, social events, or a trip to the grocery or mall.  They started and ran Scott Hams for over 50 years.  The joy was in being together, serving and having relationships with their customers, going to flea markets, and winning national, regional, and state championships and various awards.  Lesie was often heard to say how much he enjoyed working with the 4-H kids and watching them compete.  Leslie enjoyed being on his tractor and working on the farm he grew up and lived on most of his life.  In 1961 at the Kentucky State Fair, Leslie was awarded the top 4-H Showmanship Award over all breeds of cattle and also exhibited the champion steer at the state fair.  The following year he had the Reserve Grand Champion, then the champion at Evansville 4-H competition.  He had often mentioned that his family brought the first registered Angus in Muhlenberg County.  Beginning again in his 50’s, he enjoyed working with his Angus cattle and selling registered Angus bulls on Scott Farms.

Leslie served his church in many ways over the years, including Deacon, Song Leader, Sunday School teacher, van driver, pulpit committee, Cemetery Trustee, and establishing the Oak Grove Cemetery Trust Fund.  He had a pastoral care way about him, showing up if you had a surgery, death, or need.  He served his community in many ways such as the Southern States Board and UK Extension Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Survivors include his wife of 60+ years June Scott, children William (Sherri) Scott and Maclynn (Mitch) Zebrun; three granddaughters Jessica (Chad) Anderson, Daryan Duran, and Destiny Sikes-Zebrun; and two great granddaughters Klara Anderson and Grace Duran; nieces and nephews, cousins, and his church family.
