United Way 211 offers answers for those in search of services

Muhlenberg County has joined the United Way 211 service and residents can now call one number to receive information about a wide range of services available. From Veteran’s services to school resource centers, from medical providers to housing assistance, 211 can match callers to services in the community with just one call.

Often times, when a person is in need of assistance, or is new to the area, they may not know who to turn to or how to obtain services. Now residents can simply dial 211 to be put in touch with a operator who can help provide information on the wide array of services available in Muhlenberg County.

“We are excited to be included in the new 211 service now being provided to our county,” said Debra Gorham, with Hope2All Food Pantry in Drakesboro. “This service will help with people who may not be aware of the different opportunities that are available to them. We are hoping that this will also help connect them to others providers.”

Referral specialists receive requests from 211 callers, and can access databases of resources available from private and public service agencies, match the callers’ needs to available resources, and link or refer them directly to an agency or organization that can help.

Dialing 211 will provide individuals and families in need of a shortcut, through what can be a bewildering maze of service agency phone numbers. Resources include basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter, as well as rent and utility assistance. Physical and mental health resources, work supports (job training, transportation, education), access to non-English speaking support, support for older residents and people with disabilities can also be accessed through the service.

Family and youth support services, such as childcare, school resource centers, summer camps, tutoring, and child protective services can also be found by dialing 211.

“I am happy to see all of our schools listed in this resource. I’m confident this will help families who are needing a number quickly,” said Carla Embry, spokesperson for Muhlenberg County Schools.
