Tunnel to Towers 5K

Lilly Chaney, of Greenville, sings the National Anthem to kick off the Tunnel to Towers Western Kentucky 5K run at Veterans Plaza in Greenville on Sept. 11. First place went to Zach Creek, 21, of Central City with a time of 20:32. Ashley Gamblin, of Greenville, runs with an American flag. Eric Bertram and Chris Conley, both of Owensboro, run with Honor & Remember flags. Muhelnberg County Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Hinton with Sheriff’s flag. Rondal Hambrick, of Central City, and Lane Maddox, of Bremen, complete the 5K in full firefighter turnout gear. The run honors a NYC firefighter who ran from the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on 9/11, and perished in his attempts to rescue people. Jennifer, at right, and Brian Reynolds after the run. They serve with the Poole, Kentucky fire department and completed the 5K wearing about 80 pounds of gear. Jennifer said she overcame wanting to quit by looking at the badge she was wearing representing a first responder who died in the attacks, and remembering they didn’t quit that day.

Greenville was host to a Tunnel to Towers 5K run on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The foundation, started by the family of a firefighter who lost his life that day, builds homes for catastrophically injured first responders and military veterans.
