Greenville- Sylvester (Sly) Lewis Johnson, 46, passed away Friday, July 16, 2021 at his residence. Born June 15, 1975 in Greenville, he was a member of Duvall’s Chapel General Baptist Church, 275 State Route 2533, Greenville and was employed by Cracker Barrel in Madisonville. He also served on the Greenville City Council. Sly graduated from Muhlenberg South High School where he was best known for being the school mascot the “Soulman”. Following high school, he attended Madisonville Community College, he had a heart to serve and he loved all people. He spent his life giving in any capacity that he could. He never met a stranger. If he met you once, he called you friend. He was loved by many. He wore many titles that include son, brother, uncle, coach, mentor, friend….and now some are calling him a legend. As the songwriter penned “your candle burned out long before your legend ever will”. Sylvester Johnson will forever live-in the hearts of many.
Survivors include his loving mother, Gladys Johnson, of Central City; sisters, Connie (Joseph) Tyler-Givens, Augusta, Ga., and Pamela Johnson of Greenville; aunt, Elaine Reed of Chicago, Ill.; nephew, Derek Tyler of El Paso, Texas; nieces, Whitney Tyler, of Apex, N.C. and Alexis (Franklin) Sabo of Louisville; two great nieces; a host of cousins and countless friends.
Services will be Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Duvall’s Chapel Church in Greenville with Rev. Gary Embry, Eulogist and Rev. Joseph Givens, Officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Greenville. Bibbs Funeral Home in Greenville, KY is in charge of arrangements.
