ARLINGTON, Va. – Major (Ret) Jason Lewis Thomas, USA, 53 of Arlington, Va. passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the Virginia Hospital Center. Born in Greenville and spent his later childhood in Southport, N.C. and married his high school sweetheart, Susan. He was a proud graduate of The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina and entered the US Army, where he became an Army Ranger. His military service began in Special Operations and for over 20 years would dedicate his life to military service, including four deployments to combat duty, three of those in Iraq. He received the Bronz Star and two oak leaf clusters. His last tour he served as training commander for 5,000 Iraqi troops. Upon returning to the USA, Jason was utilized as development and author of tactical military maneuvers for Iraq and Afghanistan. Jason served at the Pentagon under the Army Chief of Staff. He then completed his master’s degree at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C. and then served as lead representative to the US Cyber Command. After retirement, he served as Chief of Staff of Veterans Experience Office in Washington, D.C.
In private life Jason volunteered for his sons athletic teams, St Andrews Men’s Ministry, and the American Legion Executive Committee. He also enjoyed tending his trees, playing music, traveling, and spending time with his aging dog, Pumpkin. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Charles “Tib” and Eva Lewis.
Survivors include his wife Susan, two sons, Nathan James Thomas and Cullen Finley Thomas, both of Arlington, Va. Also surviving is his mother an step father, Judy and Bob Harris of Greenville; father Joseph R. Thomas of Florence, Ala.; brother and sister in law, James and Lori Finley; aunt and uncle, Bob and Ruthie Lewis; and cousins Dr. Bracken Lewis, Brittany Lewis, and Eva Kate Brinkley.
uneral services will be held at the St Andrews Episcopal Church in Arlington, Va. Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow the service. Final interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in the spring of 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial gifts be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, The Citadel Foundation, or the American Legion Post 139 in Arlington, Va.
