CENTRAL CITY – John Rexford “Rex” Smith, Jr. 82, went home to be with the Lord Monday, August 11, 2025, under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky, following a brief but courageous battle with illness. Born on August 2, 1943, in New Jersey, Rex lived a life marked by hard work, faith, and love for those around him. A proud union millwright, he dedicated many years to his trade and served as superintendent during the construction of the Big Rivers Power Plant in Centertown.
Rex was a devoted member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Central City, where he found joy in fellowship and worship. His faith was the foundation of his life, expressed through his kindness, generosity, and steadfast spirit. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Smith; and step-daughter, Lesli Fields.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Janis Smith; three daughters, Leah Smith, Kristine Adkins, and Amanda Smith; one stepdaughter, Christi Steele; and one stepson, Jeromey Fields.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Lighthouse Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Mike Graber.
