James “Leon” Sweeney

James “Leon” Sweeney, 81, of Greenville passed away Sunday, March 30, 2025, peacefully at his home. He was born to Calvin and Marie Sweeney (deceased) who raised him with a strong work ethic and a humble character.

Leon was married to Angelin Sadler in 1962. They were blessed with two children, Bobby (Debra) Sweeney and Michele (Randy) Coleman. He was the proud “Papaw” to Ashley (Matt) Painter, Lauren Pendley, Makayla Sweeney, Caleb Sweeney and Jenny Beth Gray. As he would say, now let me tell you about my Great grandchildren Mattox, Asher, Ava, Owen, Ryann, Ashtynn, Kailey, and Madden.

Leon and Angelin were married 60 years at the time of her passing in 2022. Her death left a huge hole in his life these last few years.

What a legacy he leaves behind as a family member told the story at his bedside this last week. As a teenage boy there was a car accident near his home where a child was trapped underneath the car. He lifted the car off the child single handed to allow others to get that precious baby out. Through the years many of his farm hands and those he worked with in the mines referred to him as the strongest man they ever knew or “Superman”.

He loved to make those he loved laugh, and his wish for you would be to get along with family because life is too short. As the sign in his yard reads “Be kind God loves you”. More than anything he would want you to be sure you have a personal relationship with Christ.

The celebration of his life will be at Gary’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 2 with funeral services to begin at 1:00 PM. Brother Bob Thurman will officiate with Leon’s grandchildren assisting. Burial will follow at Joines Chapel Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of funeral at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville.

A special thank you to Hosparus Health (hospice) who ensured he was able to return home and remain comfortable until he drew his last breath. The family asks that you would do some Act of Kindness to honor him.

Online condolences to the family may be made at www.garysfuneralhome.net
