SCHEREVILLE, Ind. – Hattie Sumner, a longtime resident of Schererville, Ind. passed away Tuesday, November 19 peacefully at Avalon Springs Health Campus in Valparaiso, Ind. Born September 2, 1935 near Martwick. She attended Martwick Community School and in 1952 she graduated from Drakesboro Community High School. After high school she married Floyd Sumner, her high school boyfriend. In 1954 Floyd and Hattie moved to northwest Ind., finally settling in Schererville in 1963. She lived there until moving to Avalon Springs in 2023.
She was preceded in death by Floyd, her loving husband of 67 years.
Survivors include her son, Richard (Annette) Sumner and her daughter Paula (Mike) Rogers. Hattie was also a loving Nana and Granny to Kelly Ponsler, Jennifer Sumner, Beth Black, Joshua Sumner and Sarah Harness and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Ray Fields of St. Charles, Mo.
Throughout her life she maintained an active role in her local church, first at First Southern Baptist in Hammond, then at First Baptist in Griffith. At her passing she was a member of Eastlake Baptist in Crown Point.
Funeral service will be were held Monday, November 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Lincoln Ridge Funeral Home, Schererville, Ind. Final resting will be at Calumet Park in Merrillville.
