Dorothy Nell Dukes, 90, passed away Friday, May 20, 2022 at her daughter, who lovingly cared for her in her final years, Georgia Nell’s home in Bloomington, Ind. Born December 3, 1931 in Muhlenberg County, to Elgin McAfee Oates and Flora Belle Bethel Oates. She was a member of Lone Star General Baptist Church. Dorothy worked hard on the farm while raising seven children. In her later years she enjoyed a canoeing trip with the whole family on the Current River at the age of 53 and went parasailing at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her husband George Warren Dukes, daughter Beverly Ann Dukes, and son-in-law Dean Dragoo.
Survivors include her daughters, Wanda (Leslie) Harper, Brenda (Donnie) Pendley, Carolyn “Jeanie” Dragoo, Teresa (Steve) Graham, Georgia Nell (Howard) James; son, Wallace Dukes; son-in-law, Royce Dukes; sisters, Bernice Wagoner and Marianna McGhee; grandchildren, Jacqueline Harper Morel, Alison Harper Duthie, Michael Pendley, Brad Pendley, Marinda Dukes Duvall, Anthony Dukes, Monica Dukes Lovell, Erica Dragoo Dukes, Jennifer Dragoo Miller, Rodney Dukes, Curt Dukes, Laura Graham Schembri, Adam Graham, Jessica Graham, Christian James, Madison James; twenty-two great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held Monday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville conducted by Rev. Royce Dukes. Burial will follow in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, May 23 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville.
