DRAKESBORO—- Darriel Ray Sweeney, of Drakesboro, died September 28, 2024 at the Heartford House in Owensboro. Born in Muhlenberg County April 8, 1940, the son of Rev. Calvin Joseph Sweeney and Gladys Marie Jameson Sweeney. He worked for R. E. Getty Paving and G&W Paving in Bowling Green. He was of the Assembly of God faith. He loved farming and was well-known in the county for his sweet watermelons. He enjoyed socializing, as well as visiting the local flea market. His nickname was Claw Hammer, a reflection of his love for CB radios.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elizabeth Casebier, two brothers, Vondell Lee Sweeney and J.C. Sweeney, two sisters, Jean Millard and Edna Mae Day.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will follow in Joines Chapel Cemetery in Clifty.
Survivors include two sons, Darron Sweeney (Ingrid) Clarksville, Tenn., Shawn (Stephanie) Sweeney of Bowling Green; two step-daughters, Audra (Cliff) Jenkins Baumert of Fla., Michelle Riffel of Kans.; one grandson, Trenton; one granddaughter, Madison; several step grand and great-grand children; one brother, Leon Sweeney of Greenville; three sisters, Diann (Charles) Graham of Greenville, Karen Dukes of Greenville, and Sharon (Wyatt) Oates of Graham; mother-in-law, Dorothy Casebier of Drakesboro; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral at Gary’s Funeral Home.
